The Halifax Wanderers are the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention in the 2024 CPL season after a 2-1 loss to Cavalry FC at ATCO Field on Saturday.

Needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Wanderers went toe-to-toe with the hosts in a thrilling attacking contest, but were ultimately undone by goals from Callum Montgomery and Tobias Warschewski. Their lone goal came from Giorgio Probo early in the second half.

The win, meanwhile, moves Cavalry up into second place, two points ahead of Atlético Ottawa. A victory, or any dropped points from the capital club on the final day of the season means that Cavalry will finish this year in that position.

Halifax wasted no time in creating a chance, as some lovely play down the left flank saw Tiago Coimbra flick the ball into the path of Probo just inside the box. The Italian, however, sent his shot just over Marco Carducci's net 28 seconds into the match.

In the third minute, Cavalry came within inches of opening the scoring, as Warschewski broke in behind and played a ball across the box. Sergio Camargo, however, somehow tapped the ball wide of a gapping Halifax net.

Massimo Ferrin then forced a pair of saves from Carducci, first on a near-post strike on a great cross by Clément Bayiha, before testing him again on a header in the 17th minute. Halifax kept pressing as the half wore on, and Probo forced another stop from Carducci after finding a pocket of space at the top of the box in the 34th minute.

Cavalry were dealt a really tough blow in the 40th minute when Tom Field pulled up and had to be replaced by Bradley Kamdem due to injury.

Despite plenty of chances at both ends, the match remained 0-0 at the half.

Two minutes into the second half, Cavalry broke that deadlock. After Lorenzo Callegari was dispossessed in midfield, the ball fell into the path of Warschewski, who sent a bouncing strike from outside the box just inside the post and behind Yann Fillion to make the score 1-0. It was the German attacker's 10th goal of the campaign, moving him up to second in the league in scoring, behind only Atlético Ottawa's Rubén del Campo.

Just five minutes later, however, Halifax found an equalizer. Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé picked off a pass from Marco Carducci, which he then played into the path of Probo. This time it was the Halifax midfielder who sent a low shot from outside the box just inside the post to make it 1-1.

Needing a win to keep their season alive, Halifax continued to push. They came close again through a bouncing ball in the Cavalry box in the 65th minute, but Coimbra couldn't get the decisive touch to take it past Carducci.

Moments later, Ali Musse had an excellent chance of his own as Warschewski played him in with a lovely ball in behind, but Fillion saved his shot. Then it was Daan Klomp, who couldn't steer a second-phase ball across goal from Camargo in the 66th minute. Musse had another incredible opportunity in the 73rd minute, as he chipped Fillion from close range but could not keep his effort on target.

Cavalry, however, would not be denied in front of a fantastic atmosphere at ATCO Field. In the 79th minute, a whipped-in corner kick from Musse was directed by Kamdem off of Montgomery and into the back of the net to give the Cavs a 2-1 lead. It was the Cavalry defender's first CPL goal -- and one that could prove quite significant in his side's season.

Minutes later, Ali Musse, who could not buy a goal on Saturday night, hit the post on another excellent chance.

The goal ultimately seemed to break the Wanderers' resolve, knowing that they needed two goals in the closing minutes to keep their postseason hopes alive. The visitors had a few more chances, largely through substitute Sean Rea, but both of his attempts were blocked.

They will remain in eighth position to conclude the penultimate week of the CPL season.

Cavalry, meanwhile, will head to Winnipeg next weekend for a big clash with Valour FC as part of The Outcome, where all four of the league's final weekend fixtures will be played concurrently on Saturday, October 19 at 4:00 p.m. ET on the OneSoccer Youtube channel.

Cavalry FC jumped ahead of York United into third place in the Canadian Premier League table on Friday night, as they triumphed 2-0 over the Nine Stripes at York Lions Stadium to collect three much-needed points.

For this key matchup in the title race, there was no shortage of talking points heading in. Cavalry had to play without two of their defensive stars, with reigning Player of the Year Daan Klomp suspended and in-form fullback Fraser Aird out injured. Meanwhile, the Nine Stripes were likewise missing some key pieces in the backline, but they were buoyed by the return of leading scorer Brian Wright after a three-game absence.

The Cavs came flying out of the gates, generating five shots in just over five minutes to start the game -- one of them requiring an excellent reaction save from Thomas Vincensini.

Things did settle down after that opening flurry, but it would still be the Cavs opening the scoring at the 20-minute mark. Sergio Camargo made a lovely run toward the right side of the box and found Tobias Warschewski with the cutback; the German forward had not one but two attempts blocked by York's Elijah Adekugbe on the goal line, but the ball fell once more -- this time to Ali Musse, who buried it to put the visitors in front.

The rest of the first half passed relatively without incident, although a couple of heated moments right on the cusp of halftime did lead to a pair of yellow cards to York defenders Oswaldo León and Max Ferrari in quick succession.

With his side entering halftime down a goal, York coach Benjamín Mora opted to make a change at the interval, swapping Josué Martínez into his midfield in place of Santiago Márquez. Less than 15 minutes later, he also brought in Kembo Kibato -- making his club debut after arriving last week from Vancouver FC -- in place of Orlando Botello.

Just after the game ticked over an hour, though, Cavalry struck again. After York had the ball down in the attacking third, Warschewski dug the ball out and launched a counter, drawing three defenders toward him and knocking it forward for Camargo. He took a few strides with the ball in transition and looked up to see Vincensini well off his line, so Camargo lofted a shot from almost 40 yards out, sailing it over the head of the keeper and into the back of the net.

After taking a comfortable lead, Cavalry did well to see out the remainder of the evening. They controlled the tempo of the match and kept York from establishing a rhythm, also making a handful of changes to not only add some defensive cover but collect some much-needed U-21 minutes as well.

To make matters worse for York, Jorge Guzmán was shown a red card (for a second yellow within about 15 seconds of the first) just seconds before the end of the match, meaning he'll now face suspension for at least one upcoming game as well.

The visitors thus held on to win 2-0, not only leapfrogging York to officially occupy third place, but also moving to level footing with second-place Atlético Ottawa at 38 points (although still behind with fewer wins).

Cavalry will clinch their spot in the playoffs this weekend if Halifax Wanderers draw against Valour FC and Vancouver FC lose to Forge FC.

Forge FC remained the top side in the Canadian Premier League on Saturday, as they defeated fellow title contenders Cavalry FC 2-1 at Tim Hortons Field in the fourth and final meeting between the sides of the 2024 regular season.

Both teams sought to put their best foot forward for this massive title race clash, although each manager was forced into a handful of lineup changes. Forge moved Béni Badibanga into the middle of the attacking line, while Noah Jensen retained his place in midfield after last week's two-goal performance. Usual captain Kyle Bekker remained out of the starting XI, although he did make the bench. For Cavalry, meanwhile, Bradley Kamdem and Fraser Aird were wingbacks in a back five, while Nicolas Wähling led the line in a pairing with Ali Musse.

The match got off to a spirited start with some end-to-end play, and the hosts cracked open the scoring early. Badibanga made an immediate impact in his new role as he took a pass at the top of the box with his back to goal and tapped it between his own legs into the path of Tristan Borges, who buried a well-placed shot with his left foot into the far corner.

With the early goal -- his seventh of the season and his 33rd in his Forge career -- Borges became his club's all-time leading goalscorer across all competitions.

After the early fireworks, though, the first half settled down considerably. Cavalry held their 3-5-2 shape well, and commanded more possession, but Forge did threaten more in transition. Cavalry's best chance came when Aird volleyed a shot from near the six-yard box midway through the half, but Jassem Koleilat made an outstanding reflex save to keep his team in front.

The second half had a similar pace to the first, and 10 minutes into the frame Forge found a way to double their lead. Noah Jensen sent in a cross from the edge of the box that struck Kamdem's hand on the way through, prompting the referee to award a penalty kick.

Borges took the spot kick, smashing it coolly to his left for his second of the game.

Less than five minutes later though, Cavalry found their way back into the match. In the fray after a free kick near Forge's penalty area, Tristan Borges caught Sergio Camargo in a challenge in the box. Camargo went down from the contact, and the referee awarded a penalty to the Cavs.

Aird was the one to take the penalty for Cavalry, but Koleilat made an excellent save diving to his left -- but only parried it as far as Daan Klomp, who finished well to make it 2-1.

The Cavs adjusted their shape after scoring, putting Lowell Wright on to play a more traditional striker position and shifting to a back four as they sought an equalizer.

Cavalry definitely found more frequent opportunities after the change, and were the clear aggressors in the final 15 minutes of the game as Forge looked to defend their lead.

They were not able to find a second goal though, left disappointed and -- for the second time this year -- heading home from Tim Hortons Field empty-handed.

With the 2-1 win, Forge ensured they'll stay atop the league for another two weeks at least, widening the gap between them and second place to five points. Cavalry, meanwhile, remained in fourth, now seven points back of the top.

In front of an outstanding crowd at ATCO Field on Saturday, a stoppage-time winner from Daan Klomp gave Cavalry FC a monumental 1-0 victory over Pacific FC.

The Tridents had been the only team in the CPL that Cavalry had not defeated this season heading into Saturday's contest, but doing so means five straight victories -- and more importantly a move into third place in the CPL table. They are now just two points behind rivals Forge FC who sit top of the table.

Cavalry's Ali Musse forced the first save of the game in the 13th minute with some quick buildup down the right flank, playing the winger into the box. His shot, however, was well saved and collected by Emil Gazdov.

The match settled into a familiar rhythm in the early going, with Cavalry FC holding the bulk of possession, and probing away at the resolute Pacific FC backline. When the Tridents won the ball back, they looked quick and decisive on the counterattack.

It was on one such occasion that the Tridents forced the next big chance. A dangerous cross from Georges Mukumbilwa from the right flank dropped into the path of Zakaria Bahous, but Marco Carducci got across to make a brilliant save to keep the match level.

After that moment, the Tridents began to find more of a foothold in the game, attacking with more and more frequency as they put the Cavalry FC backline under significant pressure.

Right before the half-time whistle, Lowell Wright forced another good save from Gazdov with a strong solo effort. The score, however, remained 0-0 when that whistle went.

The Cavs were forced to make a change early in the second half, when Maël Henry pulled up injured and had to be replaced by Sergio Camargo. The substitute quickly made his presence felt, creating a very good chance for Shamit Shome shortly upon his introduction, which was again well saved by Gazdov.

Musse forced another strong save from the Tridents' keeper just five minutes later on a curling free kick that Gazdov deflected to his right. The Cavs kept pressing, with wave after wave of attack frustrated by a strong Pacific FC defensive effort.

In the 79th minute, Musse won another free-kick just outside the Cavalry box to the left, but Fraser Aird could not get his delivery right. Then in the 89th minute, Gazdov made another outstanding save on Klomp from close range.

But spurred on by their home supporters, Cavalry didn't stop charging. In the first minute of stoppage time, Klomp took advantage of a moment of chaos in the Pacific FC box, and slid the ball past the young Pacific goalkeeper.

It was heartbreak for the Tridents, who perhaps deserved more for a courageous defensive effort, but a big three points for a Cavalry FC side who seem like a team of destiny right now in their quest to earn back-to-back CPL regular season titles.

Cavalry FC became just the second away team to win at York Lions Stadium this year on Friday night, as they defeated York United FC 2-1 in the rain to climb up to third place, putting them just one point back of the league lead.

With both clubs entering the game in good form, neither manager wanted to deviate much from what had been working. That's why York boss Benjamín Mora named an unchanged starting XI to the side that beat Valour last weekend -- although Santiago Márquez did make the bench after signing this week. Cavalry's Tommy Wheeldon Jr., meanwhile, only made one change after last weekend's victory over Halifax, as Eryk Kobza returned to the defence in place of the injured Tom Field.

It was a fast-paced game to begin, if a little disjointed on account of the rainy conditions making it difficult to control the ball. York had the better of the early opportunities on the slick pitch, with Brian Wright trying to find space away from Cavalry defender Daan Klomp, although the Cavs had a couple opportunities as well via Ali Musse's efforts on the right wing.

After half an hour of probing, Cavalry were the first side to break through, as Shamit Shome carried the ball forward quickly on the counter. He switched it across to Bradley Kamdem, who spotted a lane opening up between York's centre-backs where he found Maël Henry. The young attacker cut toward goal and flicked a well-placed shot into the top right corner, giving his side a first-half lead.

That lead wouldn't last long, however. A few minutes before halftime, York worked their way back into the attacking third as Juan Cordóva brought down a ball in the far corner. As multiple defenders closed in on him, he played a ball through them to Elijah Adekugbe in a huge amount of space. Adekugbe curled a cross toward goal, just over the fingertips of Marco Carducci to find Josué Martínez, who headed home the equalizer.

Coming out of halftime, York nearly got on the board quickly as Brian Wright picked off a ball in midfield and bore down on goal alone, although Cavalry's Kobza closed him down quickly enough to prevent the Golden Boot leader from finding the net again.

Shortly after, the Cavs went down the other end on the counter-attack as Ali Musse played through Lowell Wright -- who had come on as a substitute for Tobias Warschewski just before halftime. Wright tried to beat Thomas Vincensini but the York keeper was able to save it with his leg, but only as far as Fraser Aird, who finished from a tight angle to put Cavalry back in front.

York made their first substitutions with 20 minutes to go, as Mora handed a club debut to Márquez, simultaneously bringing on Orlando Botello and Austin Ricci in an effort to get back in the game.

In the final 15 minutes, York buzzed around the Cavalry box with a handful of corners and free kicks, showing plenty of desperation in hopes of finding another goal to salvage a point.

Despite a spirited push to the end though, York were unable to score the equalizer they needed as they fell for just the second time under Mora’s tenure. With the win, Cavalry moved up to third, but find themselves just one point behind both York and Forge FC.

Cavalry FC continued their charge up the standings on Saturday afternoon, climbing into third place with a 3-2 win over Halifax Wanderers FC at ATCO Field.

An important block from Cale Loughrey, in his return from an illness that kept him out of Halifax's last match, denied a powerful shot from Fraser Aird in the ninth minute, but led to an early corner kick for the hosts. Cavalry took the lead from the ensuing set piece, with Ali Musse curling a cross onto the head of Daan Klomp, which was redirected into the back of the net to give the hosts an early advantage.

They didn't have the lead for long, however, as the Wanderers struck back just two minutes later.

A deep cross from a wide free kick found the head of Dan Nimick, who headed the ball back across the penalty area. Tiago Coimbra was in the right place at the right time to catch the Cavs defenders ball-watching, and got a second header on it, redirecting Nimick's ball past Marco Carducci to tie things up at 1-1.

A wild back-and-forth start to the match continued in the 21st minute, as the Cavs got a bit of help to restore their lead.

Nicolas Wähling got onto the end of a floating cross from Fraser Aird, but his attempted shot was not of the quality he was hoping for, sending it laterally across the box. The ball deflected off Loughrey, bouncing into the bottom right corner of the net to put the Cavs up by one.

The Cavs had two great scoring chances a few minutes later to extend their lead, both from outside the box. Maël Henry's initial effort crashed back out off the woodwork, before Diego Gutiérrez followed up with a powerful second shot that forced an excellent save from Yann Fillion.

The Wanderers goalkeeper made another big stop in the 39th minute, lunging to his left to push a header from Tom Field around the post. This time the corner would be inconsequential, with the play ending on a Bradley Kamdem shot that went high over the crossbar.

It was an end-to-end, high-paced first half at ATCO Field, with Cavalry outshooting Halifax 11-6, 4-3 in terms of shots on target -- and taking the lead going into the locker room.

Sean Rea nearly scored his first for the Wanderers eight minutes after halftime, taking a shot from inside the area that took a deflection before bouncing inches wide of the post. Moments later Cale Loughrey made up for his earlier own goal with a crucial block, getting back and making a big challenge on Wähling as the Cavs forward looked to put the ball into the empty net with Fillion way outside of his box.

Cavalry extended their lead in the 66th minute, and for the second time in this match it was Daan Klomp powering the ball into the back of the net with a header. This time the ball reached him from an inch-perfect cross from Aird.

Halifax pulled themselves back within one four minutes later, from the penalty spot. Klomp was penalized for a tackle in his own box, giving his fellow Da(a)n -- Wanderers defender Dan Nimick -- a chance to score from 12 yards out. Nimick rarely misses those opportunities when they are presented to him, and beat Marco Carducci with a great shot to make it 3-2.

https://twitter.com/onesoccer/status/1822387908457669054

The Cavs screamed for a penalty at the other end of the pitch in the final moments of the second half after they thought they saw the ball strike the arm of a Wanderers defender, but referee Mario Al-Ayass waved away the protests.

After the fourth official's board flashed six minutes of stoppage time to end the match, Cavalry's focus turned to protecting their lead rather than extending it, running the ball toward the corners of the pitch as the Wanderers desperately tried to win it back to push for a late equalizer.

With Fillion in the Cavalry box in an attempt to score from a late corner, Loughrey got his head on a corner kick into the area, but his effort on goal was easily caught by Marco Carducci. As the Cavs goalkeeper fell to the ground with ball in arms, the referee blew the whistle to end the match, and confirm three big points for the hosts.

They now sit third in the table, leaping over Forge FC and now just one point back of York United. They are also two points back of first-place Atlético Ottawa -- but all three of those teams are set to play later in the weekend, including Ottawa visiting Forge later on Saturday night.

Cavalry FC maintained their undefeated record against Vancouver FC on Friday night in Langley, with a 1-0 victory.

Maël Henry's first goal of the season, in his first start of the campaign, was the difference for the visitors, who picked up their second consecutive road victory.

Cavalry looked the sharper of the two sides in the early stages of the match, finding ways to move the ball through the Vancouver press and find space in the attacking third -- especially down the flanks.

In the 23rd minute, that paid dividends. Fraser Aird played a ball down the line to Sergio Camargo, who looked to play into the path of Diego Gutiérrez. A somewhat fortunate deflection off Vancouver defender Allan Enyou saw the Cavalry midfielder get in behind and skip down the byline. His low cross deflected off the hand of Vancouver keeper Callum Irving, and into the path of Henry, who simply had to stay composed and tap the ball home to give Cavalry a 1-0 lead.

Henry was nearly in again in the 33rd minute, as he got in behind the Vancouver backline and made a clever touch to take down a Charlie Trafford long ball. Vancouver centreback Rocco Romeo, however, made a brilliant challenge in the box to deny the opportunity.

Despite a solid amount of control as the half wore on, Cavalry were not able to add to that lead. Nor were Vancouver able to get much going offensively, managing just one shot on target during the first 45 minutes -- leaving the Cavs up 1-0 at the half.

Both sides made changes at the half, with Bradley Kamdem returning, while Vancouver FC brought on 16-year-old Grady McDonnell -- coming off his first career assist -- and Mikaël Cantave.

Cantave quickly provided a spark for the hosts, causing all kinds of problems for the Cavalry backline down the left flank -- firing a warning shot that was just high and wide in the 54th minute.

Cavalry quickly settled things down once again, however, and in the 63rd minute Henry from a distance, and Camargo from close range, forced a pair of quality stops from Irving as the visitors pushed for a critical second.

Vancouver looked to respond, as new midfielder Olivier Rommens found teammates in good areas on multiple occasions, showing his stellar passing range. None of them resulted in anything more than half chances, however.

In the 75th minute, Cavalry brought on new signing Lowell Wright for his club debut, and almost immediately he forced a fantastic stop from Irving with a fierce shot on target.

Vancouver FC searched desperately to find a late equalizer at home for the second straight week. In the 85th minute, substitute TJ Tahid found Diaz outside the box, who sent a curling strike just wide of Marco Carducci's net.

Cavalry had one last chance late, as Malcolm Shaw found himself in plenty of space as Vancouver pressed for a winner in stoppage time. But he could not connect with the onrushing Wright, and the chance went out for a goalkick.

With the victory, Cavalry FC leap over Vancouver FC in the standings, and move up into fourth place.

For the ninth time in 2024, a club record for a single season, Cavalry FC played to a draw on Sunday, this time 1-1 with rivals Forge FC.

Daan Klomp opened the scoring, before Forge equalized through a Tom Field own goal. The chaotic rivalry match also saw a Tobias Warschewski penalty stopped by Chris Kalongo, and Forge's Daniel Parra sent off late in the match.

Forge looked dangerous through the early portions of the match, nearly opening the scoring in the fifth minute as the league's hottest striker, Kwasi Poku, sent a header just over the bar.

In his first Canadian Premier League start, Nana Ampomah then had a pair of chances, forcing saves from Carducci on both occasions. He came especially close on the second chance, as a quick one-two with Noah Jensen afforded him a volley from close range that he ultimately scuffed.

It was Cavalry who had a good opportunity next, as Shamit Shome had a great chance to open the scoring from a Fraser Aird cutback in the 29th minute, but could not get his shot on frame.

In the 34th minute, a player that has been a constant thorn in Cavalry's side over the years, Kyle Bekker, was denied only by the woodwork on a curling strike from distance after more good work in the attacking third from Forge. The visitors looked as though they had a penalty shout moments later, as the ball struck Cavalry's Daan Klomp's hand in the box, but it went uncalled.

Forge finished the first half with a stunning 11 shot attempts on the road in Calgary, but the match remained 0-0 at the half.

Looking for a spark from his side, Cavalry manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr. made a pair of substitutions at the half, bringing on Sergio Camargo and Diego Gutiérrez.

Camargo made a positive impact incredibly quickly, as he was levelled in the box by Daniel Parra and won a penalty less than a minute into the second half.

Warschewski stepped up to the spot, but his penalty was denied brilliantly by Forge's Kalongo who not only dove across to make the save but also held onto the ball as well.

Cavalry, however, kept pressing and less than ten minutes later they had their opener. This time Camargo picked out Daan Klomp in the box with a perfect cross that the reigning CPL Player of the Year flicked into the net for his first of the season to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The hosts held the lead for just over a minute. Forge then went the other way, and won a corner kick. In the 58th minute, Kyle Bekker played that ball to the near post, and Cavalry's Tom Field flicked it over his own goalkeeper to tie the match at 1-1.

Forge hit the post for the second time in the match in the 65th minute, this time through Poku on a low effort across goal. Noah Jensen had a great chance on the rebound, but Klomp blocked his shot brilliantly.

It was Cavalry, however, who pressed for a winner in the late goal as they had a number of decent chances, including when Warschewski put the ball over the net from close range in the 67th minute.

They were given a further opportunity to take control in the 82nd minute, as Parra was given a second yellow card and sent off as a result.

Minutes later, substitute Maël Henry nearly scored a wonder goal from distance, but struck the crossbar and the woodwork continued to play a big role in the match. But Forge were able to hold on for a point.

As a result of the draw, Cavalry are just one point below the Canadian Premier League playoff line as the weekend concludes. Forge, meanwhile, remain in third place with both sides continuing their struggles to find consistency this season.

York United FC solidified their position in second place on Saturday, as they improved to 4-1-1 under Benjamín Mora with a well-earned 2-1 away win against Cavalry FC at ATCO Field.

On a sunny afternoon in Calgary, Cavs manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr. opted to field a lineup with two changes from the side that beat Valour last weekend, as Callum Montgomery joined the defence in place of Eryk Kobza, while Jesse Daley slotted back into midfield. York, meanwhile, made only one personnel change -- that being Oswaldo León -- but the Mexican defender's insertion meant a broader formation change, as York played with three centre-backs and allowed Max Ferrari and Kadin Martin-Pereux to get higher up the pitch on the flanks.

The first half took a while to get going, as the two sides spent the first half hour or so mostly trying to feel one another out and establish themselves in the game. York had the better early chances with three shots in that stretch, then properly threatened when Mo Babouli turned around Daan Klomp and unleashed a good shot from distance, but Marco Carducci was able to get low and save it.

Cavalry's best chance of the first half was an opportunity that -- sort of -- fell at the feet of Tobias Warschewski, who had flicked it over York 'keeper Thomas Vincensi coming well out of his box, but Warschewski couldn't quite track the ball down to put it in the empty net before he ran out of room at the end line, putting it off the outside of the goalpost.

After a largely uneventful first half, York head coach Benjamín Mora decided to take the initiative to change the match. He took Noah Abatneh off in favour of forward Markiyan Voytsekhovskyy, switching his formation to a back four with a more attacking outlook.

The first 15 minutes of the second frame were similarly uneventful, prompting Wheeldon Jr. to make an interesting change of his own: He gave a CPL debut to German forward Nicolas Wähling, who replaced Niko Myroniuk to join the Cavs' attack and try to make an attacking impact.

At last, it was York who broke the deadlock, in the 63rd minute. Brian Wright drove toward the box and battled with Callum Montgomery, leading to the Cavalry defender fouling the York forward. The build-up to the free kick was long, as York made a couple more substitutions, which gave Mo Babouli plenty of time to eye up the distance to goal.

The York captain struck it perfectly, lifting his set-piece over the Cavalry wall and off the underside of the crossbar, beating Carducci to give the Nine Stripes a 1-0 lead.

With less than 10 minutes to play, the Nine Stripe sealed their road victory in style. Wright barrelled his way into the penalty area, keeping the ball at his feet to get into space -- enough to cut it low across goal, where 16-year-old Shola Jimoh was sprinting into the box and smashed the loose ball into an open net and made it 2-0.

Cavalry would manage to get one back at the very end of the contest, as Warschewski knocked one past a rushing Vincensini once again, this time finding the net -- in the eight minute of stoppage time. That was the final kick of the game though, as the referee blew for full time and concluded a victory for York.

Seeing off the victory over last year's regular season title winners, York United kept themselves secure in second place for another week, as they moved up to 23 points at the halfway point of the 2024 season. Cavalry, meanwhile, will remain in sixth place, as they suffered their first loss at home of the CPL campaign.

Cavalry have picked up their 3rd win of the Canadian Premier League season, as they defeated Valour FC 1-0 at Princess Auto Stadium on Sunday.

With that, they climbed within one point of a playoff spot, showing how important this win was for them, as they also won on the road for the first time in CPL play in 2024.

As for Valour, they now sit seven points behind Cavalry in seventh, having dropped four of their last five, continuing a mini-slump for them.

To start this game, Valour's Jordi Swibel nearly opened the scoring in the 12th minute, as he found himself on a breakaway after a perfect pass from Diogo Ressurreição, but despite having plenty of time to figure out how to get past Marco Carducci in the Cavalry goal, Carducci would win the battle of wits in the 1v1 duel, making a big save on Swibel's eventual shot attempt.

At the other end of the pitch, Cavalry had their first look at goal in the 27th minute, as Niko Myroniuk found Tom Field with a nice pass, but Field's outside of the foot shot attempt curled well over the goal from just inside of the box. Then, right after, they came even closer to scoring, as Fraser Aird found Malcolm Shaw with a perfect cross towards the penalty spot, but Shaw's header sailed just over the goal.

The next time Cavalry would get close to goal, however, they would not be denied.

Similarly to the chance minutes earlier, Aird received the ball out wide before pushing into the box. Known for his ability to cross, he looked likely to shape up and find a teammate from there, but then he pulled a surprise out of his locker, firing a powerful shot towards the near post, beating Valour's Jonathan Viscosi cleanly with his attempt to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Eager to pull back a goal before half time, Valour almost got one back in the 37th minute, as the ball fell to Swibel at the edge of the box, and he curled a dangerous shot just wide of the post.

On the other side of half time, Valour would continue to push in the chase of an equalizer, but their efforts would prove fruitless in the first 20 minutes, as they came closest on a Jordan Faria shot from a tight angle in the 55th minute.

Then, they'd suffer a big blow in their push to make a comeback in the 81st minute, however, as Roberto Alarcón was sent off after catching Jesse Daley up high during a scrum near the halfway line.

Despite that, Valour continued to push late, and nearly found that equalizer early into stoppage time. After a dangerous run from Abdul Binate was snuffed out by Carducci, the ball fell to Loïc Kwemi, but the Valour debutant would be unable to mark his first CPL game with a goal as his low shot would be kept out by Carducci.

At the other end, Cavalry looked to put the game to rest, and nearly did so in the 93rd minute, as Tobias Warschewski fired a dangerous free kick from distance, forcing a solid stop out of Viscosi in the Valour goal. Then, Chanan Chanda had a good look in the 96th minute, but his low shot dribbled just wide of the post, keeping the game at 1-0.

From there, Cavalry would do what they needed to do in order to hang on, giving them three huge road points to help them in their quest to push back into a playoff spot.

The Halifax Wanderers extended their unbeaten run to five matches with their first home victory of the season Monday afternoon, beating Cavalry FC 1-0 in a Canada Day clash on the east coast.

The start of the match was end-to-end, with both sides trading corners in the early goings. Massimo Ferrin had the first attempt to score in the match, taking a shot inside the penalty area that was blocked by a Cavalry defender before sailing just wide of Marco Carducci's net. Aidan Daniels had a go from distance shortly after, but his effort was also blocked.

Tobias Warschewski came inches away from giving the visitors the lead in the 21st minute. Rising above everyone to win a header on a floated cross from Fraser Aird into the box, Warschewski sent the ball back across goal, freezing Wanderers netminder Yann Fillion. It had everyone beat, but struck the right post in the top corner of the goal, before the Wanderers cleared it away.

Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé tested Carducci a few minutes later, heading the ball on goal after a deep cross into the area from Dan Nimick. Gagnon-Laparé headed the ball down into the ground to ensure it would end up on target, but when it hit the ground the grass killed a lot of the momentum the ball had and the Cavalry goalkeeper was able to make an easy catch.

Daan Klomp found himself in Halifax's penalty area with ten minutes left in the first half and unleashed a powerful shot, but he couldn't keep his effort down and it soared over the crossbar.

Both sides had their chances in the first half, but Gagnon-Laparé's header was the only effort on target, and the game was scoreless after 45 minutes.

The hosts finally broke the deadlock in the 49th minute, with Ryan Telfer picking out the bottom right corner of the net with a driven shot from the edge of the 18-yard box. Telfer ran towards the box before cutting suddenly to his left, opening up a lane for him to

Cavalry upped the tempo after conceding, nearly scoring twice in quick succession. A few minutes after Eryk Kobza hit the target with a header, Warschewski hit the woodwork again with a free kick from outside the box, thanks to a touch from a diving Yann Fillion. Moments after that, Jesse Daley fired a low shot through a crowd in front of Fillion's net, but it struck the outside of the post.

Massimo Ferrin hit the target with a low shot in the 64th minute, but Carducci denied him with a diving stop. Tom Field cleaned up the rebound with a slide tackle, which saw the ball strike Telfer and go out of bounds for a Cavalry goal kick. At the other end of the pitch later in the half, Sergio Camargo hit the net with a low shot but Fillion was again able to get down and make what ended up being a fairly comfortable stop.

The Cavs kept pushing for an equalizer, and nearly found it off the head of Klomp, who redirected a cross from Maël Henry wide of the Wanderers net. The late stages of the match were mostly spent in the Wanderers half of the pitch as they tried to hang on for the victory and Cavalry were desperately looking to steal a point.

That goal would never come, however, and the Wanderers held on for the first win at Wanderers Grounds in 2024. It is also just the third victory for the Wanderers against Cavalry in CPL history, and sees them rise to ten points on the season, tied in that regard with seventh-placed Valour with a game in hand.

For the eighth time in eleven matches this season, Cavalry FC played to a draw, this time 1-1 with league-leaders Atlético Ottawa at ATCO Field on Friday night.

A second-minute goal from Cavalry's Tobias Warschewski was cancelled out by a goal from Atlético Ottawa's Alberto Zapater in the 38th minute, with neither side able to capitalize on various chances thereafter.

The match began with a moment of silence for Dylon Powley, the former Atlético Ottawa and FC Edmonton goalkeeper, who tragically passed away recently at the age of 27. Powley also spent time with Tommy Wheeldon Jr. and many of the Cavalry players in the Calgary Foothills program.

It took Cavalry just over a minute to open the scoring. A lovely corner kick delivery from Diego Gutiérrez was headed goalward by Malcolm Shaw. Atleti goalkeeper Nate Ingham stopped the initial shot, but the rebound went back into the path of Warschewski, who smashed home his sixth of the season.

The early goal sparked a torrid pace for the opening 20 minutes of the match as both sides created multiple opportunities. There were ten shots attempted in total, five each, during that time.

Atlético Ottawa came close to equalizing on a few occasions in the early stages. First when Ballou Tabla showed exceptional skill to bring down a long ball from Alberto Zapater and turn Eryk Kobza in the box, before a slip allowed the Cavalry defender to block his shot. Minutes later, Aboubacar Sissoko played a threatening low ball across the goalmouth, but neither Tabla nor Rubén del Campo could get a foot on the pass.

Just when it looked like the match had settled down with half-time approaching, Atlético Ottawa's found their moment. Del Campo chased down a loose ball in the corner, and was given a little too much time and space to clip a lovely ball into the box. Zapater, wearing the captain's armband, was there to get on the end of the ball and head home his third of the season.

The end-to-end first half finished in a similar fashion as Warschewski nearly flicked a deflected free kick past Ingham in stoppage time, before Atleti went down the other way and won a corner on which Luke Singh really should have scored on a wide-open header from mere feet away from Carducci's net. As a result, the two sides went to their respective locker rooms after the opening 45 minutes with the score remaining 1-1.

Once again, the hosts came flying out of the gates to start the second half. Warschewski had a pair of early chances to add to his tally, including when the ball dropped to him all alone in the box in the 50th minute. His shot, however, was well-saved by Ingham.

Against the run of play, however, Atleti created a great chance as Manny Aparicio intercepted an errant Cavalry pass in the midfield and played in Aboubacar Sissoko. The Ottawa midfielder's shot was brilliantly blocked by Cavalry's Daan Klomp.

The visitors came close again in the 75th minute, as Aparicio was alone in the box, but chose to play the ball across to del Campo. Atleti's leading scorer sent a great strike toward goal, but was blocked outstandingly by Fraser Aird.

With time running down, Cavalry coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. chose to roll the dice, bringing on Callum Montgomery, alongside 18-year-old Niko Myroniuk. He also gave a debut to 17-year-old striker Chanan Chanda, who recently signed an Exceptional Young Talent contract with the Cavs.

Atlético Ottawa continued to press for a winner, and were denied by the woodwork in the 85th minute, when a mishit cross from Aparicio hit the crossbar.

Both sides have still lost just once this season, but given Atleti have four more wins than Cavalry this season, they remain eight points, and five places in the table, above the sixth-place Calgary club.

The Canadian Premier League introduced itself to Kelowna, B.C. on Sunday as Vancouver FC took on Cavalry FC in a fierce, back-and-forth encounter, but the sides could not be separated despite top-class chances at both ends as it finished in a 0-0 stalemate.

Vancouver kicked off at the Apple Bowl with four changes to their lineup from last week's 2-2 draw at York United; Mikaël Cantave returned from international duty and slotted back into the attack, and Vasco Fry came into midfield after serving a one-game suspension, while David Norman got the nod in defence and Coquitlam native Thomas Powell made his first professional start at right midfield.

Meanwhile, the Cavs offered up a mostly unchanged group from their win over Forge last Saturday, the only change being Lucas Dias coming in as a number 10 in place of the injured Sergio Camargo.

As the game kicked off, the rain in Kelowna began to ease up, although the grass pitch at the Apple Bowl remained slick and the two sides took a few moments to adjust to the roll of the ball, and it was quite a back-and-forth affair in the first 20 minutes.

Vancouver had the better of the chances in the first half-hour though; Moses Dyer and Alejandro Díaz both had wide-open chances that they put on frame, but Marco Carducci parried them -- as he also did with a well-hit shot from well outside the box by Renan García.

Cavalry had their share of opportunities too though, including one in transition for Dias who was stymied in the box by a perfectly-timed challenge from Vancouver's Kadin Chung.

The Cavs made one halftime substitution, as coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. opted to deploy Jesse Daley in his midfield in place of Charlie Trafford.

Still, the second frame began in similar fashion to the first; Cavalry had another good chance broken up by Chung, and Vancouver had some dangerous opportunities that bounced just wide of an open goal. VFC 'keeper Callum Irving played the hero for his side just before the hour mark, as Lleyton Brooks seemed sure to score with an open header in the six-yard box, but Irving caught the ball while diving and smothered it inches before it could spill over the line.

The match became increasingly chaotic and disjointed as both sides desperately sought an equalizer through quick, direct play, and the tempo of the last half-hour made for entertainingly fast-paced play, but still neither side could solve the other as they ticked past the 80th minute.

Vancouver and Cavalry could not be separated though; in spite of the flurry of opportunities and attacking play at both sides, neither managed to find the net as they finished at 0-0.

So, VFC climbed past York United into fourth place in the table, while Cavalry remain sixth after 10 matches of the 2024 campaign.

Cavalry FC extended their unbeaten streak to eight and broke a four-game winless run on Saturday as they got the better of Forge FC at ATCO Field, winning 1-0 thanks to Tobias Warschewski's fifth CPL goal of the season.

The hosts threw a bit of a different-looking lineup at Forge, with five changes to the side that drew at Pacific last weekend. Tom Field came into the side at left-back and Eryk Kobza made his first start since May 11, while Warschewski got the nod up top after scoring the prior week. Meanwhile, Forge opted not to drastically change what worked so well against York United, the only changes being Malik Owolabi-Belewu playing in defence and Chris Kalongo returning in goal.

The home side were the more aggressive to begin the match, as Cavalry had more than 65 per cent of the ball in the first 15 minutes and created a few major opportunities early. Shamit Shome had a clear look at goal and could've got a shot off were it not for an outstanding tackle by Owolabi-Belewu, and moments later Kobza was on the end of a cross but his attempt to knock it in put the ball over the bar.

Forge fought back quickly though, nearly scoring from a corner in the 21st minute and starting to establish much more control of the ball in the attacking half.

The first half ended scoreless, though Forge likely welcomed the whistle more as Cavalry finished the half with 10 shots, having been unable to capitalize on their advantage.

After the break, the match continued in similar fashion as three minutes in Cavalry looked almost certain to score, with the ball bouncing chaotically in Forge's goal mouth as Warschewski nearly put it in on the third attempt with a bicycle kick, but again it was Owolabi-Belewu with the last-ditch defending to keep it out.

Just before the game ticked past an hour, Cavalry's moment finally arrived. Lucas Dias played through the backline to an overlapping Fraser Aird, who sent it back across goal, possibly off the foot of Sergio Camargo, into the path of Warschewski who finished and put the hosts in front.

In the final half hour, Cavalry still had the greater share of chances as they sought to kill off the match. A burst of energy from Forge in the late moments brought them closer to the equalizer, but it was not enough as Marco Carducci held onto his clean sheet.

Just before the 90th minute, Forge's hopes were fully dashed as they went down to 10 men, Khadim Kane seeing a straight red card after an entanglement with Diego Gutiérrez.

The Cavs therefore returned to the win column with their second of the year, moving -- at least for the night -- back into the playoff picture.

For a second time in 2024, Pacific and Cavalry split the points in CPL play, as they drew 1-1 at Starlight Stadium in Saturday.

After an early goal from Pacific, Cavalry was able to respond in the second half, leaving them to settle for the draw.

With that, Pacific now remains winless in three games in CPL play, although they snapped a two-game losing streak in this game, while Cavalry remains with just one win on the year, with this being their sixth draw in eight games (1W-6D-1L).

Pacific nearly opened the scoring on a scramble in the 4th minute, as the ball fell to an open Ayman Sellouf in the box after a corner, but his deflected shot looped just over the crossbar to stay out.

Despite that near-miss, however, Pacific would get rewarded for their strong start in the 6th minute. After a nice sequence of play, Kunle Dada-Luke had the chance to whip in a dangerous cross from out wide, and he'd find the run of Steffen Yeates with curling ball.

From there, Yeates did the rest, adjusting his body to head it past Marco Carducci at the near post, giving his side the early lead.

After that, the game would slow down, however, as both teams settled into a rhythm. As a result, the next chance didn't come until the 35th minute, when Cavalry's Malcolm Shaw stepped up to take a free kick that he won at the edge of the box, but he'd be unable to get his dipping shot on target.

Then, Shamit Shome nearly equalized minutes later for Cavalry, as Fraser Aird found him with a perfect cross into the box, but Shome's header sailed just over the crossbar.

From there, Cavalry were able to find their best chance of the first half on its last action. After a marauding run from Daan Klomp, he found Bradley Kamdem with a perfect cross, but the Cavalry defender's powerful header struck the post and stayed out, leaving Pacific to reach half time with their lead still intact.

On the other side of the break, Cavalry maintained their push for an equalizer, and they were rewarded for it in the 68th minute. After a dangerous ball into the box from Kamdem, the ball fell to second half substitute, Tobias Warschewski, who powered the ball past Pacific's Emil Gazdov with a deflected shot to make it 1-1.

Cavalry weren't done pushing, either. They'd nearly grab the lead in the 77th minute, as Lleyton Brooks fired a dangerous shot from distance, forcing a tough save out of Gazdov to keep the game tied.

At the other end, Pacific was eager to grab back the lead, and had a great chance to do so in the 87th minute, but Sean Young sent a dangerous shot over the goal from the edge of the box.

Then, they had a glorious chance to win the game in the 92nd minute. After a perfect cross from Andrei Tîrcoveanu on a free kick, he found a wide-open Juan Quintana at the back post, but the defender sent his header wide of the post from in-close.

Continuing his strong end to the game, Tîrcoveanu nearly found Pacific a late winner a minute later, setting up Josh Heard for a breakaway, but he was denied by an onrushing Carducci.

As a result, that left both teams to split the points, much as was the case in their first meeting.
