A stoppage-time equalizer from Tobias Warschewski denied Vancouver FC what would have been a first-ever victory over Cavalry FC in a thrilling 1-1 draw on Friday at ATCO Field.

Nicolás Mezquida opened the scoring in the 19th minute for Vancouver FC with his first Canadian Premier League goal.

The match was the first time Cavalry had played a match at ATCO Field since lifting the North Star Cup after defeating Forge 2-1 in the 2024 Canadian Premier League Final.

Cavalry FC's starting eleven featured just two changes from the side that won the 2024 CPL Final. Tom Field drew into the centre of defence for the departed Daan Klomp, while 19-year-old Niko Myroniuk replaced the injured Diego Gutiérrez.

The visitors came out with a good energy and organization, making it difficult for Cavalry to play through their compact lines, and then going forward quickly in moments where they won the ball back.

In the 19th minute, the Eagles stunned the home crowd by finding the opener. Callum Montgomery was stripped of the ball by Alejandro Díaz, who poked the ball to Terran Campbell. The CPL's all-time leading goalscorer turned provider, as he calmly played the ball into the path of Mezquida, who opened his CPL account in just his second match to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles pressed their advantage, and nearly doubled the lead in the 26th minute on a decisive counterattack, but Campbell's strike was blocked well by Cavalry's Myroniuk. Campbell had another great opportunity on the ensuing corner kick, but couldn't connect well enough with his strike and it was easily collected by Marco Carducci.

Carducci was forced to make a much more challenging save just six minutes later, as again Vancouver found their way into the Cavalry box. This time, Díaz struck an effort across goal, denied by the Cavalry keeper.

The ascendent Eagles held that 1-0 lead heading into the locker rooms at half-time, easily their best half of the season so far.

Needing a response, Cavalry made a pair of substitutions at the half, bringing on former Eagle Maël Henry, and new signing Michael Baldisimo into the match.

Henry quickly proved himself to be a threat down the left flank, getting in behind just five minutes into the half, but his shot from a wide angle was off target.

The field began to tilt heavily in Cavalry's favour, as the hosts looked to avoid just their third defeat at home in CPL regular season action since 2022. Vancouver, meanwhile, were content to sit back in their shape and make it difficult for Cavalry to play through them.

Henry had another strike at goal for Cavalry in the 76th minute, but his teasing shot from distance was caught comfortably by Callum Irving.

Five minutes later, Mezquida again tested Carducci from a free kick in a dangerous area, but his low strike was caught by the Cavalry keeper. The moment seemed to embolden the visitors, who stayed on the front foot and created a few more dangerous opportunities in the next few minutes. Díaz came close on a corner kick in the 84th minute, but his attempt was blocked by Warschewski.

Cavalry were given a boost late in the match when the fourth official held up eight minutes of stoppage time. Moments later, however, Vancouver had yet another outstanding chance as substitute Kevin Podgorni broke in behind. He tried to round Carducci but the Cavalry keeper got a hand to it and denied the chance.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time, however, Warschewski rescued a point for Cavalry. After Caniggia Elva took down a long ball, the German striker set himself and sent a low driven strike across goal that nestled into the bottom left corner of the net.

Cavalry FC remain undefeated in home openers with the draw. Both them and Vancouver continue to search for their first win of the 2025 regular season.

For the first time since lifting the North Star Cup at ATCO Field in November, Cavalry FC return to Spruce Meadows for their 2025 home opener on Friday night.

It is sure to be a celebratory occasion at the grounds as Cavalry FC supporters welcome their team home following that 2024 triumph, as well as a historic victory in the home leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup tie with Liga MX side Pumas in February. That match was played at Starlight Stadium.

But Vancouver FC come to town looking to ruin the celebratory mood, and pick up their first victory of the 2025 season. Cavalry remain the only club in the Canadian Premier League who the Eagles have not defeated, still winless in their nine all-time meetings. They are also scoreless against Cavalry FC in their past three matches.

Following a difficult start to the 2025 season, with back-to-back home losses to York United (2-0) and Atlético Ottawa (4-1), the Eagles head on the road for the first time this campaign.

Despite scoring just once through those first two games, they have been getting into good positions offensively -- just lacking the final product. Through two matches, Vancouver sit tied for second in the league in touches in the opposition box, with 44, and a league-leading 58 passes into the box.

Their first road trip of the season, however, couldn't be more difficult as the Eagles land in arguably the most treacherous away ground in the league. Cavalry have lost just twice at ATCO Field in CPL action over the past two seasons combined. They have collected 15 victories and a league-leading 56 home points in that time, three more than rivals Forge FC.

Much of that home dominance has been built on defensive performance, as Cavalry have conceded just 26 goals in 28 home matches over the past two campaigns -- the fewest in the league.

However, after a 1-0 loss in opening weekend Cavalry still have never won a CPL match in the month of April. They are, however, undefeated in home openers at ATCO Field, with three victories and two draws.

Vancouver FC remain without midfielder Vasco Fry, who is serving the final match of his suspension on Friday. The Eagles are still waiting for visa approval for multiple of their international signings, while Mehdi Essoussi missed this past Sunday's match with Atlético Ottawa due to school commitments.

Cavalry, meanwhile, have a few injury questions. Diego Gutiérrez and Eryk Kobza are out with longer-term injuries, while Jesse Daley will also be unavailable on Friday. New signing, central defender Levi Laing will come into the 18 and could potentially make his debut, according to Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

All CPL matches will be broadcast live on OneSoccer, available as a linear channel on Telus’ Optik TV (Channel 980) as well as online at OneSoccer.ca, through the OneSoccer app and on the fuboTV Canada platform.

3 THINGS TO WATCH

Can Vancouver FC's Elage Bah continue his strong start to the season?: Vancouver FC has no shortage of exciting young players, but through two weeks, winger Elage Bah has quickly established himself as one to watch. The tireless attacker had a lovely assist on VFC's first goal of the season as he curled a ball in behind perfectly into the path of Terran Campbell. Through two matchweeks, he has been heavily involved on both sides of the ball for Vancouver FC, leading all players in the CPL in dribbles completed (6), and duels won (15). "He has such a great mentality, first player in the clubhouse, a lot of activation after training, and I feel he's going to have a big season," said Vancouver FC manager Afshin Ghotbi after last weekend's game against Atlético Ottawa.

How will Levi Laing's addition aid Cavalry FC's backline?: Cavalry FC's backline was always going to be a source of discussion this season following the departure of back-to-back CPL Defender of the Year Daan Klomp, but it was only exacerbated by an early-season injury to Eryk Kobza. This week, Cavalry FC got some crucial reinforcement with the signing of 22-year-old English central defender Levi Laing. A product of the Arsenal and West Ham youth academies, who made a first-team appearance with the Hammers in the UEFA Conference League, Laing brings an exciting profile to the Calgary club. "He's a big lad, he brings a great deal of athleticism, power, but he can play," said Wheeldon Jr. "You don't come through Arsenal's academy and through to West Ham, even making an appearance in the first team, with you can't play as well...he's a highly intelligent lad, that is going to be a terrific defender and a great addition."

The pros and cons of Cavalry FC's week off: Cavalry FC have had a rather unique start to 2025, dating back to opening training camp on Jan. 6 to prepare for their Concacaf Champions Cup tie against Pumas in early February. Then, after kicking off the league season on April 5 in Hamilton, they had another week off, in what Wheeldon Jr. described as a bit of a "false start" to the 2025 CPL campaign. That doesn't come without its benefits as well, however, particularly when it comes to integrating new players, and the general health of the squad. "It gives us an extra week to work on some things," said Wheeldon Jr. "Get Sham [Shamit Shome] back to full fitness, get Michael Baldisimo a few more minutes, get Levi Laing through the door."

KEY QUOTES

“They always give us a good game. I know they've yet to beat us, but it's never one that we lessen the respect we have for them. Afshin's a good coach. They try to play a nice brand of football. And they've got a nice blend of young players that they're bringing through to move on, and also some old heads. Like they're bringing back two of the most potent, if not the most potent -- Terran Campbell and Alejandro Díaz, two of the best this league's seen.”— Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

“The last time we were here was the final, and the celebrations there. So it's exciting to be back home. I think it's an opportunity for the team. We have a job at hand first and foremost, which is three points on the line tomorrow. ”— Cavalry FC goalkeeper Marco Carducci

“Obviously, we're playing the champion of last season, we're playing a team that has enormous experience and balance, and they even had a different preparation, as did Forge, because they played in the Champions Cup. So we're the big underdogs going into the match but I think football has to be played, it's decided on the day... we go there for victory, we go there for surprise and we go there to give our best, but it's going to be a massive challenge for our group.” — Vancouver FC head coach Afshin Ghotbi

“I think our defensive shape has been really lacking recently. Obviously, we are still pretty early on in the season but we've got to get that straightened out before things get worse. I think overall we've been decent, we've had our fair share of chances but we can't put it into the net. But obviously defensively we're lacking, that's the thing we've been working on in training and hopefully we'll be ready for the next game.” — Vancouver FC defender Kunle Dada-Luke

On Friday, the Canadian Premier League's 2024 champions return to ATCO Field, where they are sure to get a heroes' welcome in their 2025 home opener. A young Vancouver FC side, however, will be keen to spoil the party as they look for their first win of the season, and first-ever victory over Cavalry FC.

The marquee match will be broadcast on TSN 3, as well as OneSoccer. Kick off is set for 4 p.m. PT / 5 p.m. MT / 7 p.m. ET.

Here are nine key statistics to note ahead of Friday's clash:

41 -- Regular season victories for Cavalry FC at ATCO Field, the most home wins in Canadian Premier League history.

0 -- Vancouver FC have never defeated Cavalry FC in nine previous meetings (six losses, three draws). They remain the only club in the CPL who the Eagles did not defeat in their first two seasons in the league.

2 -- Cavalry FC have lost just twice in 28 matches at home over the past two seasons in regular season play.

58 -- Vancouver FC lead the CPL in passes played into the opposition box this season.

0 -- Cavalry FC have never won a match in the month of April in club history, a stat which continued to haunt them during their season-opening 1-0 loss to Forge FC on April 5.

608 -- U-21 Canadian minutes accumulated by Vancouver FC, who lead the league in this category. They've already given professional debuts this season to 17-year olds Kevin Podgorni, Emrick Fotsing, 16-year-old Dominic Joseph, and 19-year-old Henri Godbout.

40 -- Goals scored by Vancouver FC's Terran Campbell, the most in CPL history. He opened his account for Vancouver FC in a 4-1 loss to Atlético Ottawa this past week. That puts him two ahead of Vancouver FC teammate Alejandro Díaz.

3-2-0 -- Cavalry FC have never lost their home opener (first match at ATCO Field) in club history with three wins, and two draws.

3 -- Three of Cavalry FC's five goals against Vancouver FC last season in all competitions were scored by 2024 CPL Golden Boot winner Tobias Warschewski.

A 10-man Forge FC held on to pick up a 1-0 win over Cavalry FC at Hamilton Stadium on Saturday as the 2025 regular season winners got the better of last year's North Star Cup champions to secure all three points on opening week.

The two combatants from the 2024 Canadian Premier League final, now locked in this season-opening rematch, didn't let off even one bit when it came to the sort of fiery football we've come to expect from this rivalry, with both sides trading early jabs and looks at goal in their hunt for an opening effort.

Almost predictably, it was Cavalry FC striker Tobias Warschewski who got the first great look at goal of the match, getting on the end of a cross for an unmarked header, which Jassem Koleilat heroically saved off the line in the 27th minute. Brian Wright also had a sniff at Marco Carducci's goal moments later, but his shot hit the side netting.

So, 45 minutes and change of opening half football could hardly separate these two title contenders, with the state line shared in a near 50-50 split in almost every category, and the crowd at Hamilton Stadium turned their attention to the second half in the hope of seeing a match winner – or, at least, avoiding a goal conceded without answer.

Though both teams stayed in the referee's good books in the first half, it would take just three minutes into the second before the first yellow card was brandished as young Zayne Bruno hit Jay Herdman with a crunching tackle.

Ten minutes later, and the advantage was found, as Marko Jevremović sent in an inch-perfect cross for Mo Babouli, whose glancing header sailed right past the fingertips of an outstretched Carducci to give Forge FC a 1-0 lead over Cavalry FC.

Forge's confidence took a hit in the 72nd minute as Bruno picked up a second yellow for bowling over Sergio Camargo on a challenge for an air ball and was ejected from the match, giving Cavalry FC a man advantage for the final stanza of this back-and-forth battle. Yet, ironically, it was a Forge player who came closest to undoing their 1-0 lead as substitute Ben Paton failed to clear a cross and tested his 'keeper into making a huge save to prevent an own goal in the 87th minute.

Try as Cavalry might to find an equalizer, Forge's backline held firm for the 1-0 win, even surviving a late flurry as Koleilat stood on his head and preserved his clean sheet in dramatic fashion.

And so, head coaches Bobby Smyrniotis and Tommy Wheeldon Jr. co-signed the latest chapter in this historic Canadian soccer rivalry with an all-too-familiar customary handshake – Bobby getting the last laugh on this day... but just for now.

Bitter rivals Forge FC and Cavalry FC are no strangers to kicking off their seasons against one another in Hamilton, as this is their third straight meeting on the league's opening day.

This time, however, the usual script is flipped. It is Cavalry, not Forge, who come into the year as the reigning North Star Cup champions following a 2-1 victory against the Hamilton club in the 2024 Final at ATCO Field in Calgary.

Forge, however, do still enter 2025 as the CPL's defending regular season champions, with both teams carrying those respective belts into Saturday's heavyweight bout, their 33rd all-time meeting in all competitions.

Saturday's match will also be the first CPL game to air on TSN as part of a new partnership between the national sports broadcaster and OneSoccer.

"I love these games, because they bring the best, and sometimes the worst, out of all of us," said Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. "But they're terrific games, and you know now that's being televised nationally, I think it's a good advert for the league."

As a reward for their success last season, both clubs have already been in action in 2025, competing in the Concacaf Champions Cup in early February. Cavalry made history as the first CPL club to win a match in the competition, defeating Liga MX side Pumas 2-1 in the first leg, but ultimately lost the tie 3-2. Forge, meanwhile, suffered a more humbling 5-0 result on aggregate against CF Monterrey.

Five months after the two sides last met, in the 2024 CPL Final, Cavalry’s team will likely look very similar. Just one player, albeit an important one in 2024 Defender of the Year Daan Klomp, did not return to the club from their starting XI in that match. In total, some 20 players from the championship side return for 2025.

Forge, on the other hand, have seen a bit more turnover than usual this off-season. Their Champions Cup starting eleven had five new players acquired this off-season: right-back Rezart Rama, left-back Marko Jevremović, central defender Dan Nimick and attackers Mo Babouli and Brian Wright.

"It's an exciting group," said Forge FC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis. "A lot of familiar faces, but a lot of new players, a lot of new players that can bring something special to this team."

The reigning CPL Players’ Player of the Year, Wright, has been particularly prolific against Cavalry over the years, with his five goals and four assists the most he has managed against any CPL club. Cavalry players are certainly cognizant of this, as they awarded him the most points (69, seven first-place votes) of any club during Players’ Player of the Year voting this past season, with his name appearing on 23 Cavalry ballots.

Cavalry look to change a unique piece of club history on Saturday, as they have never won a Canadian Premier League match in April. They have also never defeated Forge on the opening day of the season (two draws, one loss).

Last season, they started the year especially slow. Cavalry won just two of their first twelve games in 2024 -- eight of which were draws. While they ultimately finished second in the table behind Forge, it was the first season in club history in which they never occupied the top spot in the table even once during the campaign. If their ambitions for 2025 are to be realized, a better start to the season is a must.

For Forge, meanwhile, last year's 2-1 victory over Cavalry was the first time they won their opening match of a CPL season. They have conceded first in all six season opening matches in their history, including the league's first-ever goal scored by York's Ryan Telfer on April 27, 2019.

Can Forge begin the season with a measure of revenge for the 2024 Final? Or will Cavalry FC pick up the 2025 season where they left off in 2024, with a statement victory over their Hamilton rivals?

3 THINGS TO WATCH

Both clubs begin 2025 season looking to raise the bar: If Forge FC and Cavalry are any evidence, it's that winning doesn't get tiring, it just increases the desire to want to do it more. Forge begin the season desperate to reclaim the North Star Cup, as well as finally capturing an illusive Canadian Championship. For Cavalry, meanwhile, they at long last tasted the champagne of victory in a CPL Final. Now, they want more. "We want to chase more trophies, we want to chase new records," said Wheeldon Jr. "And I think that's the exciting thing, when you return back to the season". Neither club is quiet about their ambitions heading into the 2025 season -- and it is that mentality which has led to so much historic success.

Fresh off a contract extension, can Tobias Warschewski continue outstanding goalscoring record?: As the Canadian Premier League's Golden Boot winner last season, and after winning the 2024 CPL Final MVP, the German striker's prolific record in front of goal isn't exactly a secret. In his most recent stretch of matches, however, dating back to the last few weeks of the 2024 regular season, Warschewski has been nearly unstoppable. He has scored eight times in his last seven matches played across all competitions -- starting this year in top form as well with a stunning strike against Pumas in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions Cup series. That stretch includes two huge goals against Forge -- the match winner against the Hamilton club in the 2024 playoff qualifying semi-final, and the opener from the penalty spot in the 2024 final. "He's a player that if I'm a fan I want to go watch," said Wheeldon Jr. "You know, if I'm a coach, he can drive me mad at times, but he's an artist...the bigger the game, the better he wants to play in it."

Can Forge build off last season's historic home record?: There is no doubt that Forge FC's 2024 CPL regular season title was built at home. They won 11 of 14 matches at home, and managed 34 points at Hamilton Stadium -- both club records, and just one fewer than the single-season CPL record for home points set by Cavalry in 2019. That was ten more points than any other club managed at home last season. If Forge want to reach similar heights in 2025, maintaining Hamilton Stadium as a fortress remains vital, and that begins Saturday against Cavalry.

PROJECTED STARTING XIs

Forge FC: Koleilat; Rama, Nimick, Achinioti-Jönsson, Jevremović; Hojabrpour, Bekker, Borges; Choinière, Babouli, Wright

Cavalry FC: Carducci; Aird, Kobza, Montgomery, Kamdem; Daley, Shome; Musse, Camargo, Elva; Warschewski

ALL-TIME SERIES

Forge FC wins: 14 || Cavalry FC wins: 10 || Draws: 8

Last meeting:

Nov 9., 2024 — Cavalry FC 2-1 Forge FC (2024 CPL Final)

KEY QUOTES

“The beauty of these games is both teams don't know much about each other, for all the games that are happening on opening day across the league. That's the beauty of it. That's the excitement of it for players, for coaches and all the fans.” — Forge FC head coach Bobby Smyrniotis

"It's shown that teams that have success at home give themselves a better opportunity to have success in the league. And last year, we made a big commitment to do that...this year is no different, there's a huge push to continue to have success here at home, in front of these great fans." — Forge FC captain Kyle Bekker

“Listen, they've signed well, Babouli is no stranger to Forge and Bobby and how they want to play, nor is Rezart Rama. But they've signed a new fullback, signed Dan Nimick, Brian Wright was [Players'] Player of the Year. So they've signed well and I'm sure they've been working on how that works, so, like every time were play them, we know that they come with threats. But they also have some openings that we can attack as well.” — Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

“"From day one we want to win titles. We want titles like, for example the Canadian Championship, no CPL team has won [it]. I think we're hungry for the title, and we know how it feels now to win a title, and you get hungry for more. If I'm being honest, this feeling after winning the North Star Cup was an amazing feeling, and I want to have this feeling again this year.” — Cavalry FC striker Tobias Warschewski

Striker to remain in Calgary through 2026 with an option for 2027

Calgary, AB - Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) has signed forward Tobias Warschewski to a new two-year guaranteed contract, with an option to extend through 2027.

The native of Germany has earned a reputation for his ability to change a game in any competition with his innate goal-scoring threat. The forward has netted 16 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions since joining the Cavs in 2024.

Warschewski came out on top of a tight race for the CPL’s 2024 Golden Boot award, honouring the league’s top scorer, after contributing 12 goals in 24 league appearances. He captured the award in style, netting two goals against Valour FC on the final day of the regular season to beat out a handful of league counterparts who were still in contention for the award heading into the matchday.

Warschewski then opened the scoring in Cavalry’s 2024 CPL Final win against Forge FC last November and was subsequently named the first ever CPL Final MVP after the Cavs clinched the North Star Cup as CPL Champions for the first time in club history.

And he came up big for the side earlier this year, when he scored the winning goal in Cavalry’s triumphant Concacaf Champions Cup win over Pumas UNAM, the first victory by a CPL club over a Liga MX side and the first positive result of any kind by a CPL club in the competition.

“Tobi’s quality is clear to see and a big reason behind our success last year. He thrives in the big games and always has a big moment in him. He has taken his role within the club with both hands and is deserving of all of the plaudits that have come his way. Tobi gets the fans out of their seats and helps us put points on the board, so I am delighted that our club was able to give him the extension.”

- Cavalry FC Head Coach and General Manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

“Since day one of being at the club, I knew this is the place I wanted to be. I’m very comfortable here and want to celebrate even more success with everyone that has grown close to my heart.”

Calgary, AB - Cavalry FC of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) today announced it has signed midfielder Michael Baldisimo to a one-year guaranteed contract, with an option for 2026.

Baldisimo, 24, joins the Cavs after splitting his career to date between a pair of Major League Soccer organizations, the Vancouver Whitecaps and the San Jose Earthquakes. Baldisimo is known for his precise passing ability and for providing defensive stability in midfield, where he will operate for Cavalry this season.

“Michael is a player that I was fortunate enough to work with in Canada’s youth program more than 10 years ago. I have monitored his progress over the years and also competed against him a handful of times. Each time he showed great ability to dictate the tempo of the play with the ball and disrupt the opponents when we do not have it. He is an exceptional passer of the ball and an intelligent reader of the game.”

Baldisimo has been added to Cavalry’s roster ahead of the 2025 CPL regular season.

He signed his first professional contract with Whitecaps FC 2 in the USL Championship in March 2017, before inking a homegrown contract with the club’s senior side in July 2018. Baldisimo made his MLS debut for the Whitecaps in 2020 and featured for the first team on 47 occasions before signing with the San Jose Earthquakes in 2023.

Baldisimo represented both the Earthquakes and the club’s MLS Next Pro side The Town while within the organization between 2023 and 2025. He made 14 appearances for the club’s senior side and three in MLS Next Pro.

“I’m very excited to be joining Cavalry and to work with my teammates in bringing even more silverware to Calgary,” said Baldisimo. “ATCO Field has one of the best atmospheres that I’ve played in front of, and I can’t wait to hear the fans in the stands this season.”

Baldisimo, a Canadian of Filipino descent, represented Canada at the Under-17, Under-20, Under-21 and Under-23 levels. He has since represented the Philippines internationally, making his debut for the country in March 2024 and earning 10 caps to date.

Cavalry will kick off its 2025 CPL regular season campaign on Saturday, April 5 against Forge FC at Hamilton Stadium in Hamilton, Ont. The match will be broadcast on OneSoccer and TSN2.

Calgary, Alta. native hangs up boots after a 11-year pro soccer career that spanned continents, ended in historic victories with Cavs

Calgary, AB - Cavalry FC midfielder Charlie Trafford today announced his retirement from professional football ahead of the 2025 Canadian Premier League (CPL) season.

Trafford, 32, calls time on his playing days after an 11-year professional soccer career that saw him ply his trade in Finland, Poland, Scotland and Wales, before returning to his hometown of Calgary to join Cavalry FC in 2022. Trafford also earned three caps with Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team over the course of his career.

He developed a reputation as a ball playing midfielder with a competitive bite that became invaluable to Cavalry’s midfield with over 84 appearances across all competitions with the Cavs, and helped the team claim the Canadian Premier League Shield as Regular Season Winners in 2023, as well as the North Star Cup as league Champions in 2024.

One of the most memorable moments of Trafford’s career came in his final appearance for Cavalry last month, when he scored the opening goal, his second for the club all-time, in a historic 2-1 win over Liga MX side Pumas UNAM in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup. Cavalry’s victory over Pumas was one of the most notable wins in the history of Canadian professional soccer, and put Trafford and his teammates in the competition’s history books as they became the first CPL squad to beat a Mexican side and win a match in the Concacaf Champions Cup.

“It has been an honour being part of Charlie’s playing journey. I got to work with him as a young player at Calgary Foothills, then watch him embark on his professional journey overseas with admiration, until I was finally able to convince him to return home and help us continue to grow the game here and win some trophies together. He has made a huge impact on my life as a coach and a human being. As a truly exceptional character with an incredible competitive edge, he passes on the number six jersey to the next generation with a huge sense of pride.”

- Cavalry FC Head Coach & General Manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr.

Trafford, an alum of Calgary Foothills SC, made his debut as a pro in August 2013 for Finnish club IFK Mariehamn. He spent the first few years of his career playing in Finland and Poland, representing such Finnish sides as Mariehamn, Turun Palloseura (TPS), Kuopion Palloseura (KuPS) and Rovaniemen Palloseura (RoPS) as well as Polish clubs Korona Kielce and Sandecja Nowy Sącz.

Trafford joined Inverness Caledonian Thistle F.C. of the Scottish Championship in August 2017 and went on to make 70 appearances in all competitions for the club. There, he won the Scottish Challenger Cup in 2018.

Trafford also represented Scotland’s Hamilton Academical and spent time with Wales’ Wrexham A.F.C., later featuring in the first season of the acclaimed documentary Welcome to Wrexham, before returning to Calgary and joining Cavalry alongside his cousin, former club captain and current Commercial and Marketing Director Mason Trafford, in February 2022.

“It’s hard to put this emotion into words. I’m sad, scared, proud, and excited all at once. Soccer has been one of the greatest gifts of my life. It gave me unforgettable joy and equally tough pain. It taught me everything that I know and helped me grow through setbacks and celebrate triumphs. It’s made me who I am and given me the tools and community to step into my next chapter. I’d like to thank my parents, the entire Spruce Meadows organization, Tommy, every teammate and brother I’ve shared the locker room with, my family; wife; friends; coaches; and mentors, and Cavalry’s incredible fans. I’m stepping away from playing, but the game will always be a part of me.”

-Charlie Trafford

Trafford has spent the past two seasons balancing his professional playing career with the launch of an urban farming business alongside his sister Sya. Trafford Farms first opened in Calgary in 2023, and recently debuted a second location in Didsbury, Alberta, north of Calgary. The business specializes in herbs and mushrooms that are grown locally in Alberta and are supplied to several restaurants and stores within the province. Trafford and his sister aim to provide produce grown by Canadians, for Canadians with a focus on sustainability, and he will now focus on farming full-time as he steps away from the soccer pitch.

Cavalry FC thanks Charlie for his contributions to the club and wishes him the best for the future.

Providing opportunities for development has been a key pillar for Cavalry FC, on both the playing, coaching and management sides of the club.

Jamieson Sawka, Ramon Mifflin Furthering Their Coaching Development with Calgary's Professional Men's Soccer Club

Providing opportunities for development has been a key pillar for Cavalry FC, on both the playing, coaching and management sides of the club. Throughout the seven year history, the development of players has been well documented from the first ever player sale of Joel Waterman, to the likes of Mo Farsi, Aribim Pepple, Victor Loturi and Goteh Ntignee, who have all made moves across the globe.

While players are recognized, the coaching and leadership sides of the club have also achieved great heights. Former Cavalry Assistant Coach, Martin Nash, was appointed as the Head Coach of York United in 2022. Leon Hapgood took his place at Cavalry before becoming the Assistant Coach at MLS side New York City FC in 2024.

Former Cavalry midfielder Oliver Minatel joined the club’s football operations side as the Head of Recruitment in 2022, before being recruited by Orlando City SC the following year. Vikram Virk oversaw Cavalry’s U21 side in League1 Alberta in 2024, before joining USL side Phoenix Rising as an Assistant Coach.

Jamieson Sawka

Jamieson Sawka is the Performance Manager at Calgary Foothills SC and was invited by Cavalry to the club’s preseason camp in California to assist with video analysis.

“My main priority during camp was handling the logistical side of video analysis. I would film the training sessions and matches so that the team could look back and analyze what needed to be highlighted or worked on. Overall, I ensured to capture everything the coaches needed and did what I could to set them up for success in their details off the pitch.”

- Jamieson Sawka

Cavalry spent ten days in California preparing for the first round of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup. Throughout the camp, the squad trained daily, focusing on different elements each day, and took part in two behind closed doors friendlies against MLS side Los Angeles FC and San Diego State University.

“I came back from the trip with a lot of experience and learnings. I realized how much video analysis plays a crucial role for professional clubs, and I would like to take those day-to-day operations back to my role with Foothills. I especially learned how important it is to drip feed information to the players and not give them everything at once, which I can implement across all playing levels to provide more insight into what we’re looking at when reviewing video and information.”

- Jamieson Sawka

Throughout his career, Sawka has been involved in the youth side of soccer, with California being his first experience at the professional level. He plans on applying what he learned in California to his day-to-day practices with Foothills.

“For a professional club to bring coaches like myself in who are around the youth game, it’s very important, especially for the community. It’s a really good step for all of us coaches to be given these types of opportunities.”

- Jamieson Sawka

Ramon Mifflin

Following preseason camp, the squad left for Victoria and Mexico City to take part in round one of the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.

As part of the first round of the tournament, Ramon Mifflin joined the coaching staff after being invited by Cavalry FC Head Coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. for both legs.

“I’ve known Tommy for over 17 years now, back to when we’d compete against each other as coaches at the youth level. He approached me with the opportunity to join the team as a translator for both legs in Concacaf, and it felt like such an honour to be asked.”

- Ramon Mifflin

Originally from Peru, Mifflin moved to Calgary and has been involved with youth clubs, League1 Alberta, and U SPORTS. He now acts as the Boys Technical Director at Calgary Blizzard SC, and as the men’s soccer Head Coach at the University of Calgary.

“Visiting the Estadio Olímpico Universitario with the club to face Pumas was a wow moment for me. It felt incredibly special, and making the leap into the professional environment was a phenomenal experience.”

- Ramon Mifflin

As soccer continues to develop at all levels across the country, Cavalry aims to commit to the ongoing growth of the sport and values the importance of providing opportunities for development.

“The entire tournament, I felt so welcomed and like I belonged. I wasn’t only used as a translator, but also as a voice and as an opinion in critical match moments, which meant a lot. These opportunities are super important for a professional team to provide, especially in a country like Canada where this sport is still growing. It opens your eyes and makes you a better professional and creates a feeling of motivation to get to the highest level.”

- Ramon Mifflin

The club has added two additional staff to its technical side in 2025. Justin Anderson-Louch played for South West United in his youth career before pursuing his studies at Mount Royal University, and has been appointed as Cavalry’s Video Analyst.

Francesco Bartolilo grew up playing for Calgary Villains and has joined Cavalry as the Head of Youth Development after pursuing his studies at the University of Northern British Columbia.

Cavalry FC Coaching Symposium

In 2024, Cavalry FC hosted its first ever Coaches Symposium, where club staff hosted a workshop for coaches across Alberta to attend over the course of three days at Spruce Meadows.

This symposium allowed for local coaches to learn at the highest level, while being immersed into the Cavalry environment. In fall 2025, coaches will again have the opportunity to register for the symposium, with information to be shared later in the season.
